There are many things to consider before you decide to purchase a Lhasa Apso. This dog can live from 10 to 20 years and this is a lifetime commitment from you, for the lifetime of the dog. |
| Does your entire family want to purchase a dog? |
| Does every member agree that it should be a Lhasa Apso? |
| Does anyone in the home have allergies to dogs? |
| Have you read any books about Lhasa Apsos, or spoken to any Lhasa breeders or Lhasa owners? |
| Do you know where they originally come from, or what they were originally bred for? |
| Do you know how much grooming a Lhasa requires, when kept in full coat? |
| This is an indoor dog and should not be left outside to live in the backyard. Lhasas are people dogs and they require human companionship. |
| Have you decided who will be the primary caregiver of your new dog? One person should be responsible for the dogs’ care. This should not be left to random chance. |
| Have you discussed with your family whether it should be a young pup, a young dog, or a mature dog? |
| If you do not have the time or patience to train a young pup, perhaps you should consider getting a mature dog. |
| If you are purchasing a young puppy, you will be totally responsible for the house training, leash training, and socialization of this pup. |
| Have you considered the time and effort that will be spent on training and socializing this new puppy? |
| You will have to decide if you are going to groom the dog yourself, or have a professional groomer care for the dogs’ coat. Grooming prices vary from one area to another. Even if you decide on using a professional groomer, the dog must also be groomed, at home on a weekly basis to avoid matting. |
| You must decide if you will keep the dog in a full coat or have it clipped every couple of months buy a professional groomer, or learn to clip the dog yourself. |
| There is the expense of purchasing the dog, any needles that are still required (if purchasing a young pup), annual inoculations and annual dog license. |
| There is the cost of other supplies for the new dog: Dog food, dog biscuits, water bowl, food bowl, collar, leash, a cage, and dog toys.

| Have you considered the cost of getting the dog clipped every few months, if you intend on keeping it in a short coat? |
| Have you considered the cost of grooming supplies: brush, comb, grooming spay, shampoo, rinse, and clippers (if you decide to clip the dog yourself). |
